History of an Artists’ Town

More than 400 years ago, within the fertile mountainous region of Central Mexico, the enchanting town of San Miguel de Allende was born. Prosperous from nearby gold and silver mines, and famous for its role in the struggle for Mexican Independence, artists and craftsmen have since thrived here - creating exquisite churches, sprawling Colonial mansions, handsome statues in lush parks and a charming town square that have remained intact - and admired - for centuries. In fact, since 1926 (when San Miguel was granted national monument status by the Mexican government), the town’s historic downtown has retained much of its original flavor: Colonial architecture is ardently protected, while billboards, franchise restaurants and even stoplights are rarely permitted.
